Question: Do you buy CDs or buy digital albums nowadays? Are you into high-resolution downloads or do you think MP3s are good enough?
Asked by Stephan (135.19.199.x) on May 22 2014, 12:02am
Reply on May 22 2014, 4:01am (edited at May 22 2014, 4:02am):
I mostly buy digital downloads -- having a bit of plastic to rip and put in my drawer feels pointless and wasteful. I find vinyl to be more worthwhile than CDs, having nice big artwork and a ritual of turning them over, which can be nice at times, but mostly I still find myself listening to mp3s.

High-resolution is a bunch of nonsense for consumption. Lossless compression and higher bit depths and samplerates are great (and often necessary!) if you want to do drastic and/or non-linear processing, but if you're just going to try to listen to it through an ideally-neutral stereo system, then high-bitrate MP3 is perfectly fine.

Question: Are you going to work on reaper until you die?

    I really hope not.

Question: With the inclusion of EEL, these cool user made scripts with graphical interfaces start popping up (like spk77's MIDI tools). Wouldn't it be cool if you could dock them in REAPER's interface, save them in screensets, etc. ;)

    Yeah, it would. Noted.

Question: I'm really liking eel alot, and I'm replacing most all of my python scripts. Is it possible in eel to open or run a program? e.g Open default web browser. Thanks, Wyatt

Reply on May 20 2014, 9:27pm:
Not in ReaScript at the moment, but we could probably add that.

Question: gitref.org - would you add any commands/features to this list for commonly used?

    I like git log --patch.

Question: Re: Templates. It's difficult to make suggestions about templates. I don't particularly like them that much, I think there is a fine line you don't have to cross using them. But for internal discussion at cockos, ovr_array.h could be interesting and far more valuable than me stating: this is better - this is wrong, etc. I'm extremely happy with spartan WDL.

Question: I used to hang out in #monkeyradio on the cockos irc server (and other servers before that) - does that room still exist, or a derivative of it somewhere? I miss those people and don't know how to find them.

Dunno, that server still exists but as to #monkeyradio, no idea.

Question: what you think about policy-based design with template metaprogramming in C++? i played with oculus last month and i found in their sdk some nice design decisions combined with the absence of STL.

Question: Name your favorite 16-bit game: What's special about it? I was good at REAPER tetris up until you added the destination "shadow" of each block, things get confusing when you are at the edge of losing the round...

Hmm I'd go 8-bit instead, super mario 3.

Question: Did you really photoshop EvilDragon or just stayed an idea only? I like that guy, he chose a damn good avatar and 14k posts ("steps") to gain a "proper reputation" in the forums and he ruined it all with one picture... m/ ;D

Question: Re: DPI. I haven't use a high-dpi monitor myself to know more but here's another related question. Do you think that it's worth the trouble to have a vector based skin engine or raster graphics are still good enough? Hey, have you finished -the list- for R5?
Asked by gio (94.66.94.x) on May 15 2014, 12:20am
Reply on May 15 2014, 1:39pm:
I do have a retina MBP, I should look into that. No real R5 list yet, mostly a few internal architectural changes we want to look into, but nothing that would look like much.

Question: Have you ever had to go through a programming job interview? My hypothesis is the best hackers typically don't do well at those.

Question: How long did it take you to really feel comfy with git? Did you pick it up in an afternoon or did it take a while to feel comfortable?
Asked by John (68.104.121.x) on May 13 2014, 4:52am

A few days to comfy (replacing things I did in SVN), and maybe a month or two to get to where I felt like I fully understood it.

Question: Do you ever have days or weeks where nothing seems like fun? Even the things you usually enjoy? Just wondering if successful people like yourself always feel motivated.

Question: What were your thoughts on the open workspace you had at AOL? Do you prefer to be by yourself in a room to code?

Cubicles are terrible, I'd take either an office or a very sparse open space, but you can't just cram people in there with no privacy.

Question: would it be possible to write a reaper extension to put project samplerate settings in the menubar next to audio device settings?
Asked by olillarkin (81.100.230.x) on May 8 2014, 11:19pm
Reply on May 10 2014, 11:45am:
Hmm not sure about putting UI in the menu bar easily, you could probably make an extension which added a few samplerate options as menu items, though. Not sure what sequence of initialization would need to be called to get the audio device/project to reset to the new samplerate, I can look into this (if you start implementing and want help with that, email me).

Question: Why ubuntu over debian for your servers?
Asked by Will (24.234.85.x) on May 8 2014, 8:09pm
Reply on May 8 2014, 9:58pm:
Not much thought has gone into it, they end up being pretty much the same at any rate. Anything debian-based is fine with me (have some servers running debian, other ubuntu, ends up being no different).

Question: How difficult is it, on a scale of 1 to 10, to write a good API for an audio workstation? Is the difficulty of that directly related to how the original objects that are to be exposed were classed or configured?
Asked by PunkyBrewster (76.226.147.x) on May 8 2014, 2:45pm
Reply on May 8 2014, 9:57pm:
I suppose that depends on how you define "good", whether we have succeeded at that, and also how much headache you're willing to give yourself in the future to support that API...
