Question: What are your thoughts on moving bitcoin's proof of work to protein folding? There is much resistance in the community. would you think of bitcoin as a more useful tool for humanity if protein folding becomes the proof of work for bitcoin?

That would be awesome, but it would be unfortunate if people came up with ways to cheat and produce useless results that still resulted in them having earned currency...

Question: From historical recounts of winamp, it seems you started development life on unix before learning Win32. How did that occur? Why did you start on unix?
Asked by Will (70.173.145.x) on October 11 2014, 5:03pm
Reply on October 11 2014, 7:02pm:
I did BASIC on the Atari 8-bit, then didn't program much for some years until I had a 386sx and Turbo Pascal, which was awesome, then Turbo C++, then eventually Watcom C++, then djgpp, around that time I also got an early distribution of slackware (on floppies!), which was fun and was a much better experience than Windows 3.1 (hooray, memory protection and preemptive multitasking). I was still programming stuff on djggp and linux (and sunos once I had access to sparcstations in school), when Windows 95 was released, and it took a while after that before I had good enough hardware to use it. Then there was the task of learning win32, Winamp ended up being a good project to do that with.

Question: Are you as committed to efficient coding as when you started REAPER or does laziness creep in? Do you perceive laziness in other apps/OS?
Asked by Colin (150.101.85.x) on October 7 2014, 2:32am
Reply on October 7 2014, 6:59pm:
I'm definitely as committed to making things as small and simple as possible, but am also a bit less dedicated to some of the more platform-specific size optimizations (i.e. using msvcrt.dll on win32), as they are somewhat hacks. I think generally I'd aim for quality as the top priority, then speed and size, with tradeoffs between them generally going towards speed (for commonly used functions anyway).

Question: Re: Feynman, does it all make sense to you? I tried in the past but the math flies over my head and i end up feeling defeated and stupid. :)
Asked by Will (24.234.85.x) on October 6 2014, 6:43pm
Reply on October 7 2014, 7:00pm:
I haven't read it all (or anywhere close to all) but what I have read made sense, though I haven't gone and applied it. Having said that, most of what I read I think I already had learned elsewhere... but having a good aggregation of it all is awesome.

Question: Re: Firewire, haha. Have you tried to leave a firewire cable connected to a port without a device at the other end (bare) and then hibernate the OS? I haven't try it lately but it was FUN... What wrong with firewire in your case? :)
Asked by gio (79.131.32.x) on October 2 2014, 10:15pm
Reply on October 4 2014, 8:31pm:
I haven't had that issue, I meant more the fact that Windows XP SP2 and later (including Win7) can't deal with more than about 100mbps of firewire bandwidth, with various firewire audio devices...
