There are some technological reasons (complex dealing with permissions on systems, etc), but in general I think not updating every time is a good thing for people. Maybe at some point we shall.

afaik pulseaudio is pretty high latency. pipewire is the modern thing and it can run pulseaudio emulation too afaik. REAPER can use pipewire-jack, which is a very minimal layer since their underlying APIs (pipewire, jack) are so similar.

With the new marker/region API, what is the path from adding a marker to getting the ProjectMarker object? For example, if I do something like ```lua number = r.AddProjectMarker(0, isrgn, pos, rgnend, name, -1) ``` then number is the displayed number, which can be duplicated. GetRegionOrMarker requires the internal index, and I'm not seeing how I'm supposed to get that without parsing all the markers/regions and finding the best match.

your best bet is to use the actions to set the take channel mode to the mono/stereo pair you want (also available via the item settings menu).

This is very minor thing so pls allow me to post it here. In JSFX, log(), abs(), exp() are all supported and have bright yellow color. I was using pow() in my code and for a moment i thought it wasnt supported cause its syntax color is dim like a function compared to the other math functions mentioned above, so i thought i had to define it, only to realise its actually supported. Check the syntax color for pow() vs the others. Thanks

if I was to try to make a multicam editor as a c++ plugin for reaper, what's the best way to grab the video frames from the tracks? a video processor eel2 can make a grid layout in the video preview window using input_track() but that's not clickable. I am setting up presets for the container fx plugin. Something like dynamic eq with reaeq but also drumkits/rhodes using reasampleomatic or impulse responses in reaVerb. If I export these presets via export preset library (.rpl) are the samples used in the reasampleomatic / reaverb instances stored within the .rpl file? I am trying to find a good way to build up a library of presets in case of migration between computers or back-up. How do you back-up stuff like this using reaper (re-install OS etc.)?

However, when I select H.265 as the video encoder, the parameter in the field remains h264, and the same issue occurs with all other video encoders. For the audio section, when I select the AAC encoder, the parameter populated is mp3 instead.

how come this is working alright without error, when slider1 has modes 0,1,2 and only mode 0 and 2 are mentioned in the logic. When developing an audio player for FLAC (16/24-bit) and Opus using FFmpeg, how would you provide data to audio systems (e.g., DirectSound)? I understand that a system converts all data to 32-bit float before downsampling to 16/24-bit for DAC output, so native formats work. But when playing a 24-bit file on a 16-bit DAC, wouldnt providing 16-bit dithered data help prevent quantization errors during the systems subsequent conversion from 32-bit float back to 16-bit (which is probably not dithered)?

If the source material is 16-bit, then it being converted to 32-bit FP and back to 16-bit would be lossless, assuming no processing is applied. If you apply a volume change etc, then yeah you'd in theory need to dither.

On Windows, if you're worried about it, you'll want to use WASAPI in exclusive mode (or ASIO), otherwise it'll go through the Windows mix engine which will probably ruin everything anyway.

IMO, though, dithering to 16-bit for listening isn't really necessary, unless you have an incredibly quiet room or plan on destroying your ears on the loud parts.

it is parallelized across cores, but each track runs on at most one core at once. so if you have one very intensive track, it will be the limiting factor. if you can break that track into multiple tracks (with routing), that might help.

I saw people pressing you here about supporting new versions of ffmpeg, and you replied it was a pain to do because of their constantly changing API. I just saw that you have done it. Well done! Turns out, this is was a task that an LLM could assist on. I provided some minimal source to Claude Opus 4.6, and with a simple prompt, got it to do 90% of the work (producing about 500 lines of new code in version-specific #ifdefs for 5.x/6.x/7.x -- it wasn't aware of ffmpeg 8.x, I guess it didn't exist when it was trained, so I added that manually, but it was pretty close to 7.x). It didn't produce perfect results, but it took care of the tedious part of digging through the API changes. I have mixed feelings about using this (what will the external downsides be?), but for now I'll take it as a win. As for future versions, yes we'll need to update it for the eventual ffmpeg 9.x etc.

I can use ASIO for free, and pretty much everyone should be able to use it for free. Do you think its reliable? As long as I install it, I can start using it with ASIO in REAPER. Whats the principle behind this? Would you consider implementing this kind of virtual ASIO feature inside REAPER?github.com/dechamps/FlexASIO

there's no API, it's a pain. There's classic code to use when DWM is disabled, which uses a subclass and WM_NCPAINT. Then there's the DWM mode which creates a separate layered window and parents it to the window etc. maybe I can put together a bunch of example code but also maybe a LLM already has the info.

Will you add more ffmpeg features to Reaper in the future? Such as extracting audio tracks of videos, exporting more formats and more encoding, etc...

yeah @gfx and gfx_clear go back to like REAPER 2.x or earlier, but 0xFF101010 might be problematic, could be a negative value. no need to specify an alpha channel value anyway.

If you install a version of ffmpeg that supports h264 then REAPER will render to it. as far as more recent ffmpeg versions, it's on our list but it's a huge pain in the ass to figure out. For macOS/Windows users, you can use the avfoundation/wmf encoders instead. For linux, deal with the old ffmpeg versions for now.
