Question: What kind of hi fi equipment do you use? (Speakers, headphones, amp, preamp, etc)
Asked by Wyatt (66.171.94.x) on August 16 2015, 7:32pm
Reply on August 17 2015, 3:06am:
It depends, but I have some ADAM-A7 monitors, some Meyer HD-1 monitors, various audio interfaces, some Grado headphones, some Beyerdynamic DT770s, an iphone with some decent $20 earbuds, and so on...

The HD-1s are really really good, but the A7s are also great.

Question: Do you think adding notation to a daw is something worth doing in 2015, given that less people use it nowadays and dedicated notation software will probably always outdo daw notation?

I'd like it, I've been playing a decent amount of sheet music lately...

Question: Okay, so this makes REAPER very difficult to use in live situations. I'm forced to manually insert delay plugins on each track, or I can insert a zero-latency plugin that reports the input latency on the monitored track to get the REAPER PDC to kick in. Is it not a good idea to have REAPER do this for me automatically based upon existing I/O latency configur

Question: May I be forgiven for asking about a REAPER feature due to the forum goons having no idea what I'm talking about? (i.e. what is the best possible method to handle this case?)
Asked by adlongername (70.66.148.x) on August 14 2015, 8:43pm
Reply on August 15 2015, 2:49am:
You are forgiven for REAPER questions as that is a valid question. The discouraging bit above is more to prevent people asking "when is REAPER going to do XYZ?" or "why don't you implement ABC?"

Question: Does Reaper provide an option to take into account input latency while monitoring and include this in the latency compensation to delay other tracks so they line up with the monitored input?
Asked by adlongername (70.66.148.x) on August 14 2015, 7:59am
Reply on August 15 2015, 2:49am (edited at August 15 2015, 3:01am):
That's not the way that latency compensation works in REAPER -- instead, how it is done is:

    1) You play along with the playing project

    2) When the recording is added to the project, it is offset by the monitoring latency amount (this includes both input and output!), so that what you heard while recording is what you'll hear when you play the project back.

So, the end result is the same. Get it?

By default, REAPER doesn't include PDC latency on the recording track, however there is a per-track option to have it include PDC latency on that adjustment that is made.

Question: hey, mate. Congratulations for the new release, I will give it a solid try in the wk. it seemed to me that this release was a very long run but I am way happier for the direction compared to v4. discuss your journey for this release. thanks. :)

Hah! Well let's see. In the fall some of the video stuff started shaping up, and I started making videos with it. It was a lot of fun. How did we get to August?! Lots of other things in there, and a bunch of branches ready to be integrated for 5.01/5.1. More work, too.

At this point in the existence of REAPER, we've wanted to be really careful not to break things. Which since I just wrote that, there will likely be some earth-shattering bug that requires 5.01 to be released tomorrow, but hopefully not.

That's the hardest part -- REAPER 4.7x has its flaws, but it does mostly work and mostly work well, the flaws are relatively minor and known. So any time you go make big updates, you run the risk of fucking things up completely. So hopefully we've avoided that, and me saying this doesn't jinx that. I am knocking on wood right now.
