Question: how many attempts did it take before the WALTER code was roughly doing what you wanted?

Well, it was a very iterative process, but I started out trying to design a syntax that would let me describe the complex default behavior of REAPER's track panels/etc, so that I could implement that logic in WALTER rather than in C++... and it kind of went from there, gradually converting and extending it.
