Originally the spectrum analyzer (and EQ for that matter) actually grabbed information from the frequency domain of the mp3 decoding, so it didn't require doing any sort of FFT etc. For audio CDs, we'd play them and then sample the audio device for visualization, I think (using waveInOpen() etc)..
