Question: Trackball, touchpad, j-mouse, traditional mouse, or tablet?
Asked by Krister (99.64.14.x) on November 16 2009, 6:41pm
Reply on November 17 2009, 8:36pm:
On desktops I use a normal mouse (MS wheelmouse optical).

For keyboard, I use the classic MS natural keyboard (the original with inverted T arrows -- not the elite, and not the newer ones). I have three of them (thanks to Steve for one of them!). This one I'm typing on now was made in 1998 or 1999, I believe (it has a "made for Windows 95" logo on it, too!).. and has seen use ever since. Quality stuff. I also have an old SGI keyboard that isn't bad.

For the laptop, as of a couple years ago I converted to the eraserhead thumbthingy on the Thinkpads...

Question: Briefly compare pros/cons of waveout, directaudio, ASIO, kernel streaming, etc.?
Asked by Will (68.96.206.x) on November 7 2009, 12:59pm
Reply on November 8 2009, 9:42am:
The practical pros and cons are that (on non-cheapo hardware) ASIO typically has the most well developed drivers, most readily configurable access to those, is the easiest to implement from a programmers perspective. WDM KS and WASAPI can provide similar performance to ASIO, though aren't as easy to work with.

DirectSound and WaveOut(MME) are pretty old, and relatively straightforward to support, though their architectures make it difficult to use them with really low latencies. This isn't really specific to their APIs, but more just a factor of how they are implemented everywhere.
