Question: What if Gibson (or any other) company give you $50 million for acquiring REAPER. Will you sell them your DAW and enjoy the money for rest of your life without doing anything?

Reply on February 1 2018, 2:08am:
Haha definitely not. Which isn't to say there isn't a price -- but I doubt there is a price that anybody would be willing to pay that I would accept.

Question: I really want to get into programming/scripting in Reaper. I have some experience with max/msp but not much other programming experience (eager to learn though!). I was wondering how much of those concepts from MAX will apply to JSFX and what are some important differences to be aware of going in. Any resources you would recommend?
Asked by cairca (69.120.228.x) on January 29 2018, 9:59pm
Reply on January 30 2018, 5:02pm:
I don’t know much about Max so hard to say. In Reaper there are two main separate sections for scripting — jsfx, which is essentially like writing a VST in script (often used for real-time audio and/or MIDI processing), or ReaScript which is primarily used for writing things that run in the UI thread, which works out to a higher level function.

Question: I understand you develope your software on a PC. Do you think windows 10 is ok? Or is windows 7 or xp preferrable?
Asked by Ulf Enhörning (192.176.237.x) on January 29 2018, 3:26pm
Reply on January 30 2018, 5:03pm:
These days I mostly use macOS and Linux, but I do also work on Win7 and Win10. I prefer Win7 to Win10 in almost every way, aside from it being out of date...

Question: I want to write my own DAW with quite a different aproach to conventional DAWs. I have looked into juce but feel unsure whether it is the best approach. Did you use any basic inrastructure to handle audio and MIDI or did you write it all from scratch? Can you point me in a good direction of where to start? I have a background as a painter, musician and a bit

Reply on January 29 2018, 4:50am:
Hard to say, JUCE is a bit too designed for my tastes, but I guess if you want a lot of stuff done for you it would make sense.

Question: Microsoft is trying so hard to abandon Win32 since W8, this time comes around as Polaris ( windowscentral.com/windows-core-polaris). What's your thoughts and the potential future of REAPER? Obviously I am more concerned about the technological aspects rather than REAPER's future.
Asked by Gio (79.130.189.x) on January 26 2018, 8:55am
Reply on January 29 2018, 4:46am:
I would be very surprised if MS succeeded in ditching Win32, but if it came to it, it would be very easy to make SWELL (and thus REAPER) target Polaris (in addition to Cocoa and X11)... but then you'd have to deal with all of your VST plug-ins, and suddenly Linux desktop w/ WINE would be looking pretty good to pretty much all serious Windows users now. And thus you see how big of a hill MS has to climb.

Question: Have you ever heard of or had contact with Paul Lutus? He is an early programmer who still regularly pushes updates to his website ( arachnoid.com/) and software ( bit.ly/2E4MeWs ) at the age of 72. I see similarities between the two of you, aside from both inspiring me.

Question: Hi Justin, Apologies for maybe being a PITA asking here but is there something ready in WDL/SWELL which makes drawing a transparent region of a window possible (or something like CombineRgn(...,RGN_DIFF)) on linux? I'm trying to modify the GDKwindow via cairo in WM_PAINT of my wnd proc but failing miserably. ANY pointers would be very welcome.

Question: I'm a total fan, both as a user (Reaper, Winamp etc) and a developer (profesional dev, also musician). You seem to have a super productive career, I'd love to emulate it (principles, work midset, guidelines etc). Where can I learn more about Justin Frankel's work life ? BIG THANKS, you inspire me, and Reaper is awesome!
