Question: Hey Justin, sorry for the technical question but I asked this a while back. I like to run a 32 bit version of Reason through rewire and I'm not seeing it available in Reaper, I know you told me you were going to enable a feature to get it back on. I'm seeing rewire32enable =1 in the reaper-rewire.ini file, is that it? So far it's not doing anything. Thanks for all you do
Asked by David (70.24.238.x) on December 21 2019, 2:41am
Reply on December 21 2019, 3:11am:
Should add rewire_allow32=1 under [REAPER] in reaper.ini and restart REAPER.

Question: Is a 15db bell boost on vocals nuts? I want that sweet airy feel, and the results sounds good to me :> am I going to destroy some poor earbuds user with another insane boost at the same exact frequency? :D
Asked by eubn (79.40.196.x) on December 15 2019, 11:40pm
Reply on December 16 2019, 2:10am:
It's all relative, whether it is nuts depends entirely on gain structuring...

Question: Hi there. How would you go about creating a tiny "filter" in Windows that would add some gain to an incoming signal? Similar concept to ddmf.eu/virtual-audio-stream/but just simple gain.

Question: Sorry if it is inappropriate to ask here. Why REAPER UI lags so much, especially when working on big project (with lots of tracks)? In other DAWs like Studio One, FL Studio etc., their UIs are very very fast and stable and looks nice working on them because of fluidity. Is there no way to fix UI lags in REAPER and make it smooth like other major DAWs' UI? It looks like their UI works on 60 fps whereas REAPER's UI works on just 15-20 fps, not even 30 fps :(

Question: Hi, a question about dither...so lets say Reaper calculates 64 Bit float internally. If you render a 24 Bit wav file in your final export - is dithering needed or is this automatically applied inside Reaper? Or are things (Bit depth of audio and bit depth of Reaper calculation) not related at all?
Asked by Tobias (195.81.221.x) on December 12 2019, 1:40pm
Reply on December 12 2019, 4:57pm:
Technically you do need a dither when rendering to 24-bit, and you can apply this in the render dialog.

In reality though, given the state of noise in converters, etc, for 24-bit, dither is pretty pointless. Having some noise around -140dB is just never going to be an issue.

In summary: dither is more important as the low end of the dynamic range becomes more audible. For 8-bit audio, dither makes a HUGE difference. For 16 bit, it makes a small difference. For 24 bit, it makes a VERY VERY small difference.

Question: Second daw question: what's the 10 feet high level view of multithreading? I assume roughly when you get called by the call back you have a pool of threads you ask to process a DAG starting from the leaves without dependencies and going up? Let me bluntly know as soon as the questions become annoying and I'll stop :p
Asked by eubn (79.40.196.x) on December 11 2019, 11:17pm
Reply on December 12 2019, 4:53am:
Maybe twitter would be better to avoid flooding this thing? or do it in the comments to this question? What is DAG? A good first place to look at threads is on getting data from disk. This can almost always (and should almost always) be done from a worker thread at a lower priority...

Question: When it comes to daw development what percentage of success would be due to coding knowledge and what percentage due to domain knowledge. Assuming those are the only important one bings because it is my question
Asked by Boboram (155.70.39.x) on December 11 2019, 7:53pm
Reply on December 11 2019, 10:52pm:
What do you mean by success? Software development isn't about knowledge IMO, it's more about vision and design and then figuring out how to do things...
